DNA Sampling Information
Who we are
The Dartmoor Pony Registry of America maintains the official American studbook and provides information and education to the public about the Dartmoor pony.

Both PARENTS of any foals born in 2008 and later must have DNA samples on file with the DPRA. The DNA sampling must be done by the University of Kentucky as outlined below.

DNA Sampling is required on breeding stock only. Colts must have a DNA sample on file when registering to stallion status. Fillies/mares must be done before any of their foals may be registered. There will be no requirement to sample geldings or other non-producing ponies.

The cost is $31, and the University keeps the records and sends a copy to our registrar.

DIRECTIONS FOR DNA SAMPLES

1. Print out Form: DNA Testing Form

2. Collect Hair Samples:
  • Pull 30-50 hairs from the mane or tail (5-10 hairs at a time).
  • Make sure there are some pulled hairs with a bulb or follicle at the end. (This is where we obtain the DNA.)
  • Do not use shedded hairs (from brush, etc.)
  • Align the bulb ends of the pulled hairs together and trim end without bulb to 3-4 inches.
  • Tape hair on paperwork where indicated. (Form on website or can be obtained from Registrar)
  • Complete form and place in standard envelope.
  • Put envelope in First Class Mail or Express, if desired.
